Clint Chapman
ARCOSTA Lightweight
Western Region Marketing and Manager
The presentation will focus on high performance structural lightweight concrete and its use in current design. We will also discuss other applications for expanded shale and clay, such as utilizing it for internal curing, applying to geotechnical challenges, and including lightweight aggregates into masonry elements.
Ken Luttrell, S.E., F. SEAOC
CYS Structural Engineers, Inc.
Ken Luttrell will be providing a brief review of the book, "How to Design and Build Disaster Safe Homes" by SEAOCC Member, Joe Warnes.  The just recently published book contains a wealth of information, gathered by Joe, describing natural disasters that have occurred around the world since man began recording such events.  Also included are an example design (by Ken) of a small all-concrete home that can withstand winds to 350 mph and complete details for completing such a home.  The use of Insulating Concrete Forms, (ICF's), for construction of the reinforced concrete walls and the reinforced concrete roof system is thoroughly described in the book. Finally, Ken will be reporting that the costs for constructing all-concrete replacement homes in the Santa Rosa burned areas with ICF construction have proven to be comparable to and sometimes even less than re-building with wood-framing or other construction materials. The book is available on-line from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
